Description

Sodium hypochlorite or bleach is produced by dissolving gaseous chlorine in caustic soda solution. The resulting solution has a minimum quantity of active chlorine of 100 g/l. It also contains free sodium hydroxide in excess, the remaining being water and sodium chloride.

It is a yellowish, limpid liquid with characteristic chlorine odor. It is well water soluble.

Uses

- Production of household bleach.

- Bleaching agent in the textile and paper industries.

- Used for purifying and making water drinkable.

- Treatment of cyanide containing water.

- Intermediary in organic synthesis. Chlorinating and oxidizing agent.

- Manufacture of fungicides.

- Sterilizing agent in the beer, cola drinks, wine, food industries, among others.
