It is an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide at about 50%. Together with chlorine, it results from sodium chloride electrolysis. It conforms to IRAM Standard 41129-1, type III. It is a clear and colorless liquid; it dissolves in water, methanol and ethanol; it is insoluble in ether and acetone. As liquefied chlorine, it is one of the most broadly used industrial chemicals, it being an ingredient necessary for most of the processes of manufacture.
