It is known as butyl alcohol, 1-butanol or n-butanol. It is a clear liquid, with pungent odor, non residual; it dissolves in ethanol, methanol and other organic solvents. It is slightly water soluble.

- Dehydrating agent (in azeotropic distillations)
- Ingredient in detergent formulations.
- Solvent for the manufacture of nitrocellulose based explosives.
- Solvent for man-made leather manufacture.
- Extraction agent of various fats, oils, wax and resins.
- Solvent for the manufacture of cellulose acetate based films.
